Happy holidays!

Today's Christmas and even our household feels festive! We used to celebrate Christmas a little more when my brother and I were younger. Santa brought us gifts, though sometimes he left them in the fireplace rather than under the tree, and we had a fancy family meal for dinner. I think my parents wanted to make sure we had all of the experiences our friends had so I grew up celebrating both Diwali and Christmas. This arrangement suited me fine since I love both.

Now we don't really care as much anymore for the gifts. We've simplified our gift giving to be small surprises for each of us. This year I got a box of chocolate-covered strawberries and a Moleskin notebook. My dad got a box of oatmeal, my brother three mathematics books and my mom a box of ladoos. Though our four foot tree looked fairly bare, none of us really cared that much.

Western holidays in our house are more of a chance for family time. We use them as an excuse to plan a special day filled with food, movies and people. Invariably we go to someone's house or have guests over. Even if we don't really celebrate the holiday itself, it's still a special day, which everyone needs once in a while. So I hope that your holidays are filled with lots of food, fun and love. Happy holidays!
